BYU 34, Wyoming 14
It wasn’t entirely pretty, but BYU was plenty laudable in Laramie Saturday night as the Cougars defeated Wyoming 34-14 to notch a 3-0 start to the season.
Jake Retzlaff overcame a shaky start to throw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, adding another 62 yards on the ground as well as the contest’s top rusher. He was intercepted early and nearly picked off on a few other occasions, but he improved as the game went on and ultimately led the offensive unit to rack up 458 total yards.
Keanu Hill, Kody Epps and Darius Lassiter all caught touchdowns from Retzlaff, while Keelan Marion achieved the program’s first “kick six” since 2014 and Chase Roberts provided his fourth career 100-yard outing.
Defensively, the Cougars were solid once again, surrendering just 217 yards and forcing eight Cowboy punts.
BYU has swept its non-conference slate for the second consecutive campaign and now seems to be trending in the right direction as Big 12 play begins next week at home against Kansas State.

6:29 — Wyoming took advantage of BYU’s second-string defenders for its first touchdown since before halftime.
Quarterback Evan Svoboda capped off a 12-play, 76-yard drive with a 1-yard rush into the end zone to make the score appear a bit more respectable. BYU 34, Wyoming 14.
13:22 — Amid the rout, the Cougars have forced their first turnover of the game.
Wyoming QB Evan Svoboda launched a deep shot down the sideline into double coverage, where it found the hands of a leaping Evan Johnson for an interception. BYU 34, Wyoming 7.
The pick was the first of Johnson’s career, giving BYU the ball back on its own 30-yard line.
The Cougar defense has now given up just 151 yards while surrendering a minuscule 2.8 yards per play.

0:02 — This game has officially entered blowout territory.
Darius Lassiter hauled in a 20-yard strike from a scrambling Jake Retzlaff and stretched over the goal line for BYU’s fourth touchdown of the night. BYU 34, Wyoming 7.
Retzlaff is quickly approaching the 300-yard mark in passing with 291 thus far and three touchdowns, adding another 62 rushing yards on six carries as well.
9:42 — Another Will Ferrin field goal puts the Cougars ahead by 20 points. BYU 27, Wyoming 7.
BYU traveled 45 yards on the drive prior to Ferrin’s 37-yard boot, with Chase Roberts making a highlight-reel grab to push the Cougars downfield and give him more than 100 receiving yards on the night.
14:45 — For the first time in a decade, BYU has returned a kick for a touchdown.
Keelan Marion opened the second half by taking the kickoff from one end zone to another for a 100-yard return touchdown. BYU 24, Wyoming 7.
The special teams stunner was the first such play by a Cougar since Adam Hine against Virginia in 2014 and the first to come on the road since 1998.
BYU 17, Wyoming 7
The Cougars lead by two scores in Laramie, yet their advantage could be even greater had they avoided a few missed opportunities.
While Jake Retzlaff has led BYU’s offense to 248 total yards thus far, he’s coughed up a red zone interception and nearly been picked off on three other occasions. Additionally, the Cougars are 0-5 on third down, having failed to convert on their past 16 attempts stretching back to last week against SMU.
However, BYU is still averaging 6.6 yards per play — including 4.3 yards per carry despite a depleted running back room — and is, most importantly, winning.
The Cougars’ defense has continued its solid showing on the season, surrendering just 100 total yards before halftime and forcing six Wyoming punts.
BYU will receive the second half kickoff as Retzlaff looks for a more sharp, consistent effort under center in the game’s final 30 minutes.

Jake Retzlaff connected with tight end Keanu Hill on a short underneath route, but with no Cowboys in the neighborhood, the tight end jogged 20 yards into the end zone untouched for the score. BYU 7, Wyoming 0.
Hill — who had just two receptions on the season coming into Laramie — now has three tonight to go with 36 yards.
The touchdown pass marks Retzlaff’s fifth in 2024 and eighth in his BYU career.
10:35 — It was a promising drive until it wasn’t.
After BYU had gained 60 yards on its first possession of the night, quarterback Jake Retzlaff was intercepted just before the goal line by Wrook Brown. BYU 0, Wyoming 0.
The pass came from 22 yards out and had been intended for Kody Epps, but he was completely covered by Brown.
The Cowboys will take over at their own one-yard line following Retzlaff’s fourth turnover of the season.
BYU’s road clash with Wyoming will be televised on CBS Sports Network and can also be streamed on the CBS Sports app.
